It forms part of the southern edge of Barden Moor and offers expansive views across the surrounding countryside, including Skipton and the Aire Valley. The rocky ledges are popular with climbers, whilst the circular walk from Embsay to the top and back is a very well-trodden route. The path can be seen winding its way through the heather.

The small quarry on the fell-side provided the stone for the reservoir dam wall, which was built in 1909. The workers were housed in Whitfield Syke cotton-mill on the north edge of the reservoir, which was later demolished. The warehouse, consecrated as a chapel, remains and stands as England’s last physical link to the Navvy Mission Society.
